Sewer pipe lining vs replacement: which is better for your home?

Sewer pipe lining vs replacement: which is better for your home?

You’ve had a recurring backup, or maybe we just ran a camera down your drain and showed you the problem.

Now you’re facing a decision between sewer pipe lining and a full replacement. Lining is a great, less-disruptive way to fix a pipe that’s still structurally sound, while replacement is the only choice for pipes that are collapsed or severely damaged.

The condition of your existing pipe is what decides it.

When people ask me to compare the two, I usually hear arguments for both sides. The truth is, they’re both kinda right. They are just solutions for different situations.

Here’s a quick comparison of the two main options.

Factor Pipe Lining (CIPP) Traditional Replacement
Time 1 to 3 days 3 to 7 days
Disruption Minimal digging Major trenching
Lifespan 20 to 40 years 50 to 100+ years
Best For Cracks, root intrusion Collapsed or sagging pipes

How does sewer lining compare to replacement?

It helps to know what we’re actually doing in your yard.

Sewer pipe lining, also called Cured-in-Place Pipe or CIPP, is what we call a “trenchless” method. We typically work through one or two small access points.

We insert a flexible liner coated in a special resin into your existing sewer line. Once it’s in place, we inflate it and use heat, steam, or UV light to cure the resin.

It hardens into a brand new pipe with no joints right inside the old one.

Traditional replacement is exactly what it sounds like. We bring in an excavator and dig a trench along the path of your old sewer line. We remove the damaged sections of pipe and install brand new PVC pipe, then we backfill the trench.

Comparing the 3 biggest factors

Let’s break down those factors from the table.

Disruption and time

Pipe lining is the clear winner here.

Because we don’t have to dig a long trench, your lawn, driveway, patio, and flower beds stay intact. The whole process usually takes one to three days.

It’s a true win-win.

A full replacement is a much bigger project. The digging can take days, and the entire job often lasts from three to seven days from start to finish. We’ll restore your yard or driveway when we’re done, but there’s no getting around the disruption while that trench is open.

Lifespan

This is where traditional replacement has the edge.

A brand new PVC sewer line is rated to last 50 to 100 years or even more. It’s a very durable, long-term solution.

A lined pipe has a very respectable lifespan, commonly rated for up to 50 years under ideal circumstances. In the real world, with things like aggressive tree roots or shallow pipes, I’d say a 20 to 40 year lifespan is more realistic.

Cost

I can’t give you specific numbers, but I can talk about the factors that affect your total bill.

Up front, lining is generally the less expensive option.

However, the cost of a traditional replacement doesn’t stop when the new pipe is in the ground. You also have to account for the cost of restoring your property. For example, re-sodding a lawn, pouring new concrete for a driveway patch, or rebuilding a stone patio can add a significant amount to the final cost, sometimes erasing the initial price difference.

When is lining or replacement the right choice?

The choice usually comes down to the condition of the existing pipe.

Don’t get me wrong, lining is great if the pipe is still structurally sound enough to serve as a host. It works perfectly for sealing cracks, stopping root intrusion, and bridging minor joint offsets.

But lining can’t fix everything. If the pipe has already collapsed, has a major sag causing constant blockages (a low spot known in the trade as a “belly”), or is missing entire sections, replacement is your only option. You can’t put a liner inside a pipe that isn’t there anymore.

Here in the Jacksonville area, there’s another factor to consider. Our high water table can make open trenching a very messy and complicated job. That extra complexity is a real point in favor of lining whenever it’s a viable choice for your pipe.

The only way to make the right call is to see what’s happening inside the line. Our first step is usually a proper sewer camera inspection. We’ll show you the footage so you can see the problem for yourself.

And whichever repair you choose, staying on top of routine drain care will help it last as long as possible.
