When to Repair or Replace Your Toilet

When to Repair or Replace Your Toilet

Toilets are built to last decades, but they do not last forever. Here is how to decide whether a repair makes sense or it is time for a new unit.

When repair is the right call

  • Running toilet — Usually a worn flapper or fill valve. Inexpensive parts, quick fix.
  • Weak flush — Often a flapper, chain, or partial clog in the trap. Worth repairing first.
  • Rocking bowl — Tightening bolts or replacing the wax ring can solve it if the porcelain is intact.
  • Handle issues — Simple internal mechanism replacement.

When replacement makes more sense

  • Cracks in the tank or bowl — Porcelain cracks spread. Replacement is safer than patching.
  • Recurring leaks at the base — Can damage subfloor. A new install with a fresh wax ring and supply line is often cheaper than repeated repairs plus floor work.
  • Age over 20–25 years — Older toilets use far more water per flush. A modern low-flow model pays for itself over time.
  • Frequent clogs — Old trap designs clog easily. New toilets flush more effectively with less water.

What a professional install includes

Removal of the old unit, new wax ring, supply line, bolt-down, and leak testing. Most replacements take 1–2 hours.
